Overview

The Director of Compensation & Benefits is responsible for all aspects of FirstKey Homes’ compensation and benefits programs, including the strategy, design, implementation, and administration.  The successful candidate will ensure a total rewards approach that drives employee performance and enables us to attract and retain top talent.  S/he will provide deep expertise and leadership in compensation and benefits strategy and solutions. They will manage the company’s base-salary structure, facilitate the annual goal setting, performance review, and merit processes, and oversee the annual benefits renewal and enrollment processes.

Responsibilities
  • Provide thought leadership to develop and maintain a comprehensive compensation and benefits strategy that supports human capital initiatives in attracting and retaining top tier talent while maintaining fiscal discipline.
  • Develop and maintain effective communication strategies to drive employee awareness and understanding of all compensation and benefits programs.
  • Maintain and continuously improve companywide compensation programs in line with FirstKey Homes business needs, culture, and values including compensation philosophy, using benchmarking analysis, salary surveys, salary and incentive structures, pay budgets and equity analysis. Evaluate compensation practices regularly across the organization and address gaps to ensure FirstKey Homes remains competitive.
  • Prepare executive compensation materials for board meetings to include industry benchmarking, salary recommendations and long-term incentive plans.
  • Plan and facilitate the goal setting and annual performance review processes to determine merit, bonus, and long-term incentives. Communicate strategy, timeline, training, and resources to Human Resource Business Partners and departmental leaders.
  • Oversee the selection and administration of all benefits programming, ensuring compliance, and cost competitiveness. Evaluate current benefits and review costs during rate renewals; provide recommendations; identify, select and manage vendors; design, plan and lead the roll-out of annual benefits open enrollment.  
  • Proactively manage and create strong partnerships with benefits providers, including rate renewal negotiations, claims handling, market surveys, open enrollment communication and meetings.
  • Monitor changes to legislation and ensures all programs are administered in compliance with local and national laws. This includes oversight of all compliance filings, reports, and audits related to the administration of employee compensation and benefits programs either directly or through vendors/partners.
  • Oversee the 401(k) Fiduciary Committee.
  • Collaborate with business leaders to create, refine, enforce policies and procedures regarding compensation and benefits plans. Ensure they adhere to FirstKey Homes, local, state, and federal standards.
  • Identify key performance metrics to measure the success of compensation and benefits programming. Evaluate programming, recommend, and implement solutions to enhance operational effectiveness.
  • Develop and maintain a system for documenting all compensation and benefits processes and procedures that need to be completed within the Human Resource Information System.
  • Train, develop, and manage a direct report to achieve departmental and FirstKey Homes goals. Provide coaching and mentoring to enhance performance and capabilities.
  • Stay abreast of emerging compensation and benefits practices and trends. Evaluate and implement practices that would enhance Human Resource programming and FirstKey Homes employee value proposition.

Working Conditions

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, Finance or equivalent work experience and/or education
  • Minimum 8 years of progressive experience in the role of a human resource, with a focus on compensation and benefits
  • Significant compensation and benefits technical expertise; as well as tax, regulatory and legislation impacting programs knowledge
  • Minimum 3 years of progressive leadership experience leading a team to achieve organizational goals
  • Demonstrated knowledge of human resource policy and law (e.g, SHRM guidelines, DOL and EEOC regulations, and employee grievance/relations)
  • Proven ability to interface, consult and present to Senior Business Leaders and C-Suite Executives
  • Proven ability to conceptualize and lead strategic human resource initiatives
  • Advanced proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Preferred Experience

  • Master’s in Business Administration preferred
  • Experience with HR systems integrations
  • Experience with self-insured benefits programs
  • Executive Compensation/Compensation Committee experience
  • CCP (Certified Compensation Professional) and/or CEBS (Certified Employee Benefits Specialist) certification a strong plus.
  • Experience working with contemporary HR Technology platforms (i.e. Ultimate Software)
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, high-growth company and/or private equity environment
  • Human Resources — Knowledge of principles and procedures for compensation, benefits, and negotiation. Knowledgeable of compensation and benefits analysis, trends, and best practices as well as practical approaches and solutions.
