Overview

The Senior Accountant – General Ledger will analyze, research, and prepare financial information to support monthly reporting deadlines. Due to the fast-paced nature of the business, the Senior Acct must have a complete understanding of the full trial balance.  This role will leverage Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (“GAAP”) to record property and corporate transactions related to taxes, insurance, fees and accruals and assist in month-end close by providing financial schedules and analysis.  This role will ensure all activities are properly reflected in the company’s general ledger and communicate with field markets to ensure the accuracy of accounting activities. Additionally, the Senior Accountant will provide guidance, coaching and mentoring to staff accountants as they complete routine accounting activities.



Responsibilities

  • Specialize in learning and understanding the accounting activities of property and corporate accounting and the General Ledger team
  • Understand the full general ledger/trial balance in order to research variances noted during monthly close processes
  • Understand and follow internal control policies, guidelines and procedures for all accounting activities
  • Complete complex accounting activities such as preparing and adjusting journal entries in accordance with GAAP
  • Assist in month-end close by providing financial schedules and analysis
  • Record property operation transactions such as taxes, insurance, fees, and accruals
  • Communicate with business partners to ensure completeness of monthly financial statements, including Legal, Insurance and Human Resources
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts in accordance with reconciliation deadlines established by Internal Audit and Chief Accounting Officer.
  • Calculate and complete internal management fee journal entries.
  • Reconcile including intercompany transactions and related intercompany balance sheet accounts.
  • Analyze and assist with monthly Property Tax funding requests and adjust related expense and liability accounts as needed based on Property Tax actualizations.
  • Resolve accounting discrepancies and research variances noted during financial statement reviews.
  • Review Accounts Payable activities and record adjustments when necessary.
  • Communicate updates and requests to field markets and corporate office leaders
  • Review and approve journal entries, including entries prepared by Staff Accountants
  • Provide guidance and assistance to Staff Accountants in completing routine accounting activities such as such as preparing, recording, and adjusting journal entries.
  • Assist with mentoring and coaching Staff Accountants.
  • Maintain accounting documents and retain an audit trail of all reconciling items
  • Assist Accounting Manager with audit deliverables as needed during the year end FS audit
  • Assist with special projects when assigned by the Accounting Manager and Chief Accounting Officer.
  • Serve as a backup to other Accounting teams when needed, including assist with Financial Reporting and FP&A teams with month-end close and financial statement variance analysis

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance or equivalent education from an accredited university
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licensure or on track to obtain license
  • Minimum 2 years of public accounting experience
  • Minimum 5 years of overall accounting experience including financial analytics
  • Strong Knowledgeable of GAAP, internal controls and financial reporting
  • Experience with full Trial Balance review, analysis, journal entry preparation and review
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), must be comfortable using lookup functionsand Pivot Tables
